London Changing of the Guard
Description
Experience one of the most quintessential British customs through an informative guided tour that showcases a remarkable ceremony, sure to be an unforgettable part of your London visit.
Activity Overview
When one thinks of characteristic imagery from Britain, a few elements immediately come to mind: afternoon tea, the often-overcast skies, and a resolute demeanor... but undoubtedly, the Changing of the Guard tops that list! The Queen's Guards, recognized by their vibrant red uniforms and tall bearskin hats, have become emblematic of British culture.
The Changing of the Guard is a ceremonial moment when one shift of guards stationed at Buckingham Palace is replaced by another. This event is marked by stylized marching, accompanied by the band of the Grenadier Guards, whose lively horns and drumming bring a festive atmosphere, enhancing the grandeur of the ceremony.
Unlike many tourists who often find themselves positioned at the palace's gates, missing the grandeur of the entire ceremony, you'll have the benefit of being led by a knowledgeable guide. Your guide will escort you to the optimal vantage points to witness the Changing of the Guard in its entirety, providing insightful commentary on the historical and cultural significance behind the uniforms and the intricate choreography.
This immersive experience lasts approximately 2 hours.
Enhance Your Visit with Buckingham Palace Admission
Looking to enrich your adventure? You can select a package that includes access to the iconic Buckingham Palace. Depending on your tour date, you may be able to witness one of the various guard changes occurring within the palace grounds.
On Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays, you will see the Changing of the Foot Guard, featuring foot soldiers from the Household Division. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, the Changing of the Horse Guards, or the Horse Guard Parade, showcases the mounted cavalry. Should your visit be on a Saturday, you’ll observe the Inspection of the New Guard, where the Captain reviews the incoming soldiers to ensure they are prepared and their attire is immaculate.
As local guides cannot provide commentary inside the palace, you will explore the interiors independently, guided by an official palace audio guide. This allows you to admire an array of treasures from the Royal Collection, such as exquisite Sèvres porcelain, fine English and French furnishings, stunning artworks, and ornate decorations. This is the most comprehensive experience available for your visit!
