Doka Coffee Plantation, Grecia & Sarchí Experience
The adventure starts with your hotel pickup in the morning as we set off for Hacienda Doka, one of the most prominent coffee estates in Costa Rica. Renowned for producing some of the finest quality "golden beans," our journey will take us up to 1,350 meters (4,429 feet) above sea level, where we will gain insight into the coffee making process.
Following our enlightening tour of the plantation, a satisfying lunch featuring traditional Costa Rican dishes awaits, including a vibrant salad, classic rice and beans, a choice of meat, and, of course, dessert along with a refreshing drink! Once we've replenished our energy, we'll proceed to scenic Grecia. Tucked away in the foothills of the Central Cordillera, this town is noted for its coffee and sugarcane fields as well as its production of exquisite textiles.
As we navigate the streets of Grecia, we will visit the remarkable Church of Our Lady of Mercy, known for its unique structure composed entirely of red-painted steel plates. Constructed in the 19th century, this metal church is a fine example of Neo-Gothic architectural influences. Our next stop will be the Central Market, where you can observe the lively everyday interactions of the locals.
The subsequent destination is Sarchí, recognized as the cradle of Costa Rican craftsmanship. Here, a number of artisans continue the tradition of creating local handicrafts, with the most iconic being the Sarchí oxcarts. These handcrafted wooden carts, adorned with vividly painted designs, were originally employed in the 19th century for transporting coffee from the highlands to the Pacific coast. You will also have the opportunity to view the largest oxcart in the world, celebrated as a national emblem!
After a day rich in culture and discovery, we will return to your hotel in San Jose, concluding our experience after approximately 8 hours.
