Cherchell + Tipasa Day Trip
Description
During the expedition to Cherchell and Tipasa, immerse yourself in the remnants of Roman civilization and uncover the fascinating narrative of the historic province of Caesarian Mauritania.
Day Trip to Cherchell + Tipasa
Your journey begins at 8:30 am, with a pickup from your hotel in Algiers, from which we will proceed to the ancient coastal town of Cherchell, formerly known as Iol Caesarea, the administrative center of the Roman province.
We will commence our exploration in Cherchell, where we will visit key attractions such as the bustling port and Martyrs' Square. This spacious square features the striking façade of El Rahman mosque and the remarkable 100 columns. Intriguingly, this mosque resembles a Christian church, as it used to be the cathedral of St. Paul until 1574, and stands atop an ancient Roman temple.
Following this, the itinerary includes a visit to the Archaeological Museum of Cherchell, showcasing artifacts from its impressive imperial history. After exploring the permanent exhibition, which houses several noteworthy sculptures and other remarkable antiquities, we will take a brief stroll to the adjacent Roman ruins of Cherchell. Here, the remains of columns and various architectural features of the forum, baths, and temples from the once-thriving Roman community can be admired.
Next, we will make our way to the coastal city of Tipasa, where a delightful lunch offering grilled fish awaits. Post-lunch, we will delve into the Roman site of Tipasa, a significant archaeological landmark along the Algerian shore. This location, designated a World Heritage Site, offers insights into the societal and cultural aspects of Roman imperial life.
Our final stop will take us outside of Tipasa to view the Royal Mausoleum of Mauritania, the resting place of the esteemed Berbers Juba II and Cleopatra Selene II, the royal couple of ancient Mauritania. We will conclude our trip with a return to your hotel in Algiers, with arrival anticipated between 2:30 pm and 4:30 pm.
