Acatenango Volcano 2-Day Trekking Route
Description
Embark on a remarkable 2-day trek to the summit of the Acatenango volcano, one of Guatemala's highest points, and enjoy an immersive camping experience in a stunning natural setting!
Description
Day 1: Antigua Guatemala - Acatenango Volcano
We will commence our journey from downtown Antigua, taking a minibus to the quaint village of La Soledad, nestled on the slopes of the Acatenango volcano, which stands at an impressive 3,976 meters above sea level.
Are you ready for the adventure ahead? The trekking path on Acatenango comprises four stages, with each segment lasting around one hour.
As we ascend, we will witness the gradual transformation of the landscape, from the lush agricultural fields at the base to the enchanting cloud forests adorned with breathtaking vistas of prominent volcanoes in the region, including Atitlán, Tolimán, and Tajamulco. To keep our energy up, we'll pause to enjoy a picnic featuring a chicken or vegetable burrito at the midpoint of our hike.
Upon reaching an elevation of 3,700 meters (12,129 ft), we will set up our tents and savor a warm cup of tea or coffee. Our day will conclude with a delectable dinner of pasta bolognese or a vegetarian option, preparing us for the continuation of our journey the following day.
Day 2: Acatenango Volcano - Antigua Guatemala
We'll rise early to embark on a trek leading us to the summit of the Acatenango volcano. This ascent will reward us with awe-inspiring panoramas of the Guatemalan highlands. The trail comprises challenging stretches of shifting volcanic sand, making every step a triumph!
For the more adventurous, there is an option to tackle an additional climb to the Fuego volcano. This requires an early wake-up call before 4 am, and we’ll set off in the dark to reach the summit at 3,900 meters (12,795 ft). Be aware that this route is demanding and requires self-navigation without a guide, but the opportunity to witness the spectacular eruptions up close is truly unforgettable!
After enjoying one of the greatest panoramic views in the country, we'll begin our descent back to our base camp for a well-deserved breakfast of banana bread and coffee. Once recharged, we will make our way back down to La Soledad.
Our adventure will conclude as we return to the starting point in Antigua Guatemala, anticipated to arrive between 12:30 pm and 1:00 pm.
