Description
Embark on an exhilarating off-road vehicle tour from Antigua Guatemala to uncover the majesty of Acatenango Volcano. Experience an overnight camp, where you can gaze at the dramatic eruptions of the nearby Fuego Volcano. Adventure is just around the corner!
Off-Road Vehicle Adventure to Acatenango Volcano with Overnight Camp
We will gather at Tanque de La Unión at the scheduled time before we set off in a powerful off-road vehicle heading to the stunning slopes of Acatenango Volcano, renowned as one of Central America's most magnificent stratovolcanoes. Let’s begin our journey!
After about one hour of travel, we will commence our ascent in the off-road vehicle, which will cover nearly 80% of the path.
This adventure lasts from 1 to 1.5 hours, taking us through unique volcanic scenery characterized by rich geology, including basaltic terrain, hardened lava flows, and high-altitude flora. Did you know that Acatenango features three distinct microclimatic zones? We’ll experience a spectrum of temperatures from warm to near-freezing within a day!
Upon reaching the end of our vehicle ascent, we’ll embark on a 1.5 to 2-hour hike to the summit. This final section of the journey is the most challenging, involving a steep and sandy track that demands good physical fitness.
Upon arrival at the Acatenango summit, we'll have about 30 minutes to relax, capture photographs, and take in the breathtaking views of the Fuego Volcano.
After enjoying this moment, we will make our way down on foot to the base camp, strategically positioned to offer stunning vistas of the surrounding volcanic landscape. Here, we'll have a dinner featuring seasonal ingredients, typically comprising two courses. With our hunger satisfied, we’ll settle down and spend the night in shared cabins.
The next morning, we’ll rise early to witness the sunrise over Acatenango Volcano while enjoying breakfast options like oatmeal, pancakes, or sandwiches. Subsequently, we will undertake a 40-minute hike to where our off-roading vehicle will be waiting for us.
The descent back in the vehicle will take approximately one hour, followed by an additional hour-long return journey to Antigua Guatemala. We expect to arrive at our starting point around noon.
