Description
On this excursion through the crypts of Antigua Guatemala, you will delve into the subterranean sections of the Cathedral, Casa Santo Domingo, and the Church of San Francisco. Prepare to be intrigued!
Tour Overview
Did you know that much of Antigua Guatemala's religious history lies beneath the surface? To uncover it, we will gather in front of the Cathedral of San José. After a short introduction, our exploration of crypts and catacombs will commence, allowing us to discover some of the city’s most captivating underground sites.
Our first stop will be at the crypts of the Cathedral of San José, situated beneath one of Antigua's most renowned churches. Here, we’ll descend into these arching spaces where the colonial elite found their final resting place. Did you know that during the colonial period, being buried closer to the main altar indicated greater prestige for the deceased?
Next, we will proceed to Casa Santo Domingo, a historic Dominican convent that now blends ancient ruins with museum exhibits. In this location, we will investigate its crypts, regarded as some of the most well-preserved in Antigua, while noting the visible impact of the 1773 earthquake. We will uncover how the vaults, passageways, and graves were modified to accommodate the increased demand for burials.
Following this, we’ll step into the church of San Francisco el Grande, which also served as a prominent burial ground during the colonial period. Here, we will learn about the influence of religious orders on burial practices and their role in shaping the urban environment. In addition, we will have the opportunity to witness the resting place of Brother Pedro de San José de Betancourt, a significant figure.
Lastly, we will return to our initial meeting point, concluding our 3-hour journey together.
