At the specified hour, we will gather at Hotel Gaztelu-Begi, located in Baquio, which is a mere 15-minute drive from Bermeo. Once the group is ready, we will kick off one of the essential activities in the Basque Country. Are you prepared to discover San Juan de Gaztelugatxe? Let’s begin!
We will embark on a nearly 40-minute walk to arrive at one of the most enchanting places along the Basque Coast. We assure you that the journey will be rewarding!
As we trek, we’ll traverse through a distinctive natural landscape, recognized as a Protected Biotope and regarded as one of the spectacular attractions of the Cantabrian Sea. During our walk, we’ll gradually share the history of San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, including intriguing legends associated with this site.
Upon reaching our destination, we will encounter the iconic scenery that served as a filming location in Game of Thrones. Enthusiasts of the series will feel transported to Dragonstone!
Soon after, we will ascend the 241 steps of the intricate stone staircase that leads to the hermitage of San Juan de Gaztelugatxe. Did you know this islet possesses a rich aura of magic? Its spiritual significance, historical fortification, and ties to the fishing community of Bermeo will surely captivate you.
Once we arrive at the hermitage, we’ll conclude our journey, which spans a total of 2 hours. You will then have ample time to appreciate the views from the most charming island in the Basque Country.
Essential Information
It’s important to note that this visit consists of a challenging walking route to the hermitage of San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, so comfortable footwear and water are recommended for the hike.
Furthermore, the tour concludes at the hermitage, and participants will need to make their own way back.

On the day of the activity, we'll meet in front of the Hotel Restaurante Gaztelu-Begi, located at the following address: Gibelorratzagako Bidea, 78, 48130 Baquio, Biscay, Spain.
You'll recognize the guide by an official guide ID worn on their chest. We recommend arriving at the meeting point at least 15 minutes before the start of the tour.
Important Info
- You must keep in mind that this visit includes a demanding walking route to the San Juan de Gaztelugatxe hermitage, so we recommend wearing comfortable footwear and bringing water for the path.
- Additionally, the tour ends at the hermitage, so the return path will be on your own.
