Description
On this exploration of African heritage in Cartagena de Indias, you'll uncover the roots of various local traditions encompassing dance, attire, and gastronomy.
African Heritage in Cartagena de Indias
Our journey begins promptly at the Camellón de los Mártires, also referred to as the Plaza of Peace. From this central location, we will embark on a discovery of Cartagena de Indias, delving into the rich legacy of African influences throughout the city.
Initially, we will visit the Plaza de la Proclamación, where you will observe how the African communities in Cartagena fostered their unique cultural expression. As we stroll through the historic quarter, we will pass by important sites like the Portal de las Reinas and the Plaza de la Marina, learning about the prominent Afro-Caribbean figures who have shaped our history.
Our next destination is San Pedro Claver Square, followed by a visit to Customs House Square, where we will explore the distinctions between salsa and champeta dances. This will be followed by an engaging workshop on African turbans. Participants will have the opportunity to create their own piece, a memorable keepsake to take home!
Once the workshop concludes, we will head to a vibrant location to savor some traditional Afro-Caribbean sweets paired with coconut water. Energized, we'll then participate in a dancing class where you'll master the fundamentals of the champeta. It’s time to lace up your dancing shoes!
This immersive experience wraps up after three hours in the historic heart of the city, celebrating African culture.
