Cartagena de Indias African Culture Tour
Description
Embark on an enriching experience that delves into the African heritage of Cartagena de Indias, exploring the deep-rooted influences on the city's dance, fashion, and culinary traditions.
African Heritage Exploration in Cartagena de Indias
Our journey begins at the designated meeting point, the Camellón de los Mártires, also recognized as the Plaza of Peace. From here, we will embark on a captivating exploration of Cartagena de Indias, focusing on the profound impact of African culture on the local landscape.
Our first destination is the Plaza de la Proclamación, where we'll uncover how African communities in Cartagena shaped their unique cultural identity. As we stroll through the historic district, we will visit iconic locations like the Portal de las Reinas and the Plaza de la Marina, where stories of notable Afro-Caribbean figures will come to life.
The next phase of our tour takes us to San Pedro Claver Square, followed by a visit to Customs House Square. Here, we'll explore the distinctions between salsa and champeta dances. Participants also have the option to engage in a workshop on African turbans, allowing you to create your own unique piece to take home as a cherished memory.
If you prefer an alternative to the turban workshop, you can opt for a dancing session, where you will learn the vibrant champeta steps. This promises to be a lively experience! To conclude our adventure, we'll visit a vibrant location to sample authentic Afro-Caribbean sweets paired with refreshing coconut water.
Our immersive three-hour journey into the African cultural essence of Cartagena de Indias will come to a memorable end in the historic heart of the city.
