Cherchell + Tipasa Day Trip
Your day begins with a pickup at 8:30 am from your hotel in Algiers, followed by a scenic drive to Cherchell. This historic Mediterranean city, known in antiquity as Iol Caesarea, served as the heart of the Roman province of Caesarian Mauritania.
Upon arrival, we will commence our exploration of Cherchell, focusing on its significant landmarks such as the port and the Martyrs' Square. Here, you can admire the façade of the El Rahman mosque—also known as the 100 columns. This remarkable structure, resembling a Christian church, was originally the cathedral of St. Paul until it was repurposed in 1574. Intriguingly, it stands over the foundation of a Roman temple.
Following our tour, we will visit the Archaeological Museum of Cherchell, home to artifacts showcasing the area’s illustrious imperial history. The permanent exhibition features an array of sculptures and other remarkable antiquities. Afterward, a brief stroll will take us to the Roman ruins of Cherchell, where you can see the remnants of columns and other structures that once constituted the forum, baths, and temples of this former Roman hub.
Our adventure then leads us to the coastal city of Tipasa, renowned for its extensive Roman archaeological site, which is recognized as a World Heritage Site. Here, we will delve into the social and cultural fabric of life during the Roman Empire.
The final stop on our journey will be just outside Tipasa at the Royal Mausoleum of Mauritania, the resting place of Berbers Juba II and Cleopatra Selene II, the legendary king and queen of ancient Mauritania. After soaking in the historical significance of this site, we will transport you back to your hotel in Algiers, with an expected arrival time between 2:30 pm and 4:30 pm.
