Galeras Volcano + Villages Tour

This excursion to the Galeras volcano offers a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the traditions, crafts, and culinary delights of the nearby villages, all set against the backdrop of the mountain range that supports thriving agriculture and livestock farming.

Tour of Galeras Volcano and Surrounding Villages

Our journey begins at 8:30 am next to the Antonio Nariño monument, where we embark on an exploration of the Galeras volcano area. This majestic natural landmark holds the title of being the most active volcano in Colombia.

Our first destination will be the villages nestled on the slopes of the volcano. As we travel through scenic routes flanked by lush coffee plantations and dramatic canyons, we will reach Genoy, a community adept at living harmoniously with the Galeras volcano, located just 7 kilometers (4.3 miles) away!

After discovering the rich history of Genoy, we will proceed to the municipality of Nariño, known for its delightful yucca wrappers, a local specialty sweet. Our next visit will take us to La Florida, another village where agriculture and livestock play a crucial role. Here, a variety of dairy products like cheese, cakes, and ice cream await to be sampled.

Following this, we will head to the community of Sandoná, setting off on a brief hike to one of the stunning waterfalls that punctuate this volcanic region. As we return to the village, we will meet local artisans, particularly the women who skillfully transform iraca fibre from tropical palms into exquisite artifacts, from hats to bracelets.

In Sandoná, a visit to the local school is planned before we delve into a charming farm experience. Here, we will partake in a home-cooked lunch prepared by a welcoming family, who will also introduce us to their exceptional high-altitude coffee, grown right in the surrounding mountains.

Afterward, our exploration will take us through the town square, featuring the Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary of Sandoná, a striking neo-Gothic structure that contains an intricately carved wooden Christ by artist Alfonso Zambrano.

Our last stop will be Consaca, where breathtaking views of the volcanic mountain range unfold, showcasing the vibrant colors of the landscape interspersed with panela fields. Here, we will explore the traditional sugar mills where panela canes are processed, and taste the delightful 'melcocha sandoneña', a sweet treat made from panela and peanuts.

As our day draws to a close, we will make our way back to Pasto, arriving at the original meeting point around 6:30 pm.
