Janitzio Island Day Trip
Description
This excursion departing from Morelia invites you to explore the renowned butterfly fishing techniques on Lake Pátzcuaro, coupled with a delightful visit to Janitzio Island. It promises to be an enriching experience!
Details of the Excursion
At the arranged time, we will convene at the Plaza de Armas in Morelia and proceed to the dock on Lake Pátzcuaro. Here, we will embark on a boat, ready to uncover the various attractions that the lake presents.
During approximately 1 hour of navigation, we will approach Janitzio Island, a natural volcanic rise emerging from the lake. Along our journey, we will witness local fishermen utilizing the distinctive butterfly nets. Keep an eye out for the rich aquatic life, including charales, largemouth bass, tilapia, and carp abundant in these waters.
Upon arrival at Janitzio, we will ascend towards the statue of José María Morelos, a significant monument commemorating one of the prominent leaders of the Mexican Independence movement. Marvel at the towering Art Deco sphinx, which stands at an impressive 47.75 meters against the sky.
Next, we will reboard our vessel and head towards the town of Pátzcuaro, historically recognized as the capital of this province since 1534. Here, we will delve into the life of Don Vasco de Quiroga, the first Bishop of Michoacán, who made notable contributions to the upliftment of the indigenous communities.
As we wander through this charming Pueblo Mágico, indulging in the local culinary offerings is highly recommended. Dishes such as sopa tarasca, charales, corundas, and churipo are local specialties that shouldn’t be missed.
