Sierra de Órganos & Nombre de Dios Day Trip
Your adventure begins with a pickup from your accommodation in Durango as we make our way to the Sierra de Órganos National Park. Upon arrival at this magnificent location in the Sierra Madre Occidental, you’ll be captivated by the unique volcanic rock formations that populate the area. Look closely and see if any shapes and figures emerge from these remarkable monoliths!
Continuing our journey, we'll traverse through lush oak and cedar forests, along with prickly pear and various cactus species, where wildlife such as hares, badgers, and white-tailed deer may be spotted. This leads us to the next highlight of our itinerary.
The following destination is the enchanting Pueblo Mágico (Magic Town) of Nombre de Dios, named for being the site of the first mass celebrated by Franciscans in the "name of God." You will visit the ex-convent of San Francisco, a 16th-century church renowned for its elaborate façade, Ionic columns, and intricate palm motifs in the plasterwork. Afterward, a visit to the El Malpaís mezcalería awaits, where you can enjoy a local mezcal paired with bread and cheese.
We'll also explore part of the historic Silver Route, or the Royal Road of Interior Land, an ancient trading path that extends nearly 1,600 miles (2,560 kilometers) and is recognized as a World Heritage Site. Nearby, we will visit the natural wonder of El Cuevón, a site where you may also catch a glimpse of golden eagles. This location, along with the surrounding Sierra de Órganos, served as a backdrop for the film Caveman, featuring Ringo Starr.
Your excursion will conclude with our return to your hotel in Durango approximately six hours later.
