Mesa Verde National Park Day Trip
Description
Discover the wonders of Mesa Verde National Park, the sole UNESCO site in Colorado. Experience the remarkable cliff dwellings of the ancient Puebloans while enjoying a guided historical exploration.
Details of the Day Trip
Mesa Verde National Park encompasses an impressive area of over 207 square kilometers (80 square miles) and safeguards over 5,000 archaeological sites, making it Colorado's only UNESCO World Heritage Site. Journey through the ancestral territory of the Ancient Puebloans and witness the largest cliff dwelling in North America.
When reserving your spot, you may choose between two distinct tour options: one that centers on the cliff dwellings and another that offers a broader exploration of the park's critical attractions. Given the limited availability of tickets, the tour to Cliff Palace promises a one-of-a-kind experience.
Below is a concise overview of each tour, both commencing and concluding at a central Durango meeting point, and including transportation to Mesa Verde National Park, admission to the specified sites, and a guided experience.
Cliff Palace Tour (5 hours)
By selecting this tour, our primary intent will be to explore the remarkable cliff dwellings scattered throughout the scenic park. After a brief 1-hour journey, we will arrive at the Mesa Verde National Park Visitors Center, prepared to start our exploration.
The highlight of our excursion will be the Cliff Palace, a structure with origins dating back to 1260 CE. Constructed mainly from sandstone, mortar, and wooden beams, this site is both stunning and delicate, allowing for only a limited number of visits each day. This tour includes access to Cliff Palace, along with a guided experience led by an expert ranger, who will share intriguing stories about the survival and lifestyle of this ancient community while emphasizing the importance of conservation.
The majority of our outing will center around discovering the cliff dwellings, with opportunities to explore additional lesser-known treasures within the park. Depending on your preferences, we may visit the significant sights along the Mesa Top Loop, taking brief walks to viewpoints that offer breathtaking panoramas of Cliff Palace and its natural surroundings.
After an exhilarating day at Mesa Verde National Park, we will return to Durango.
