Covadonga & Cangas de Onís Private Day Trip
Description
Opting for this exclusive day excursion to Covadonga and Cangas de Onís allows you to explore Lakes Enol and Ercina, the Basilica, and the historic Roman bridge spanning the Sella River, accompanied by a dedicated guide. The stunning vistas of the Cantabrian Mountains will surely enchant you!
Details of the Day Trip
Prepare to discover one of the most enchanting regions within the Cantabrian Mountains. We will collect you from your hotel and embark on a 1.5-hour journey towards the western massif of the Picos de Europa National Park. From the outset, the surroundings will captivate your attention!
Upon reaching the breathtaking lakes of Covadonga, our first stop will be at the Entrelagos viewpoint. Here, we can take a moment to admire Lakes Ercina and Enol. Did you know that a statue of the Virgin of Covadonga lies submerged at the bottom of Lake Enol, serving as a symbol of safeguarding?
The adventure continues as we make our way down to the Basilica of Santa María Real de Covadonga, a neo-Romanesque structure that stands proudly against the Asturian mountains.
Once at the basilica, we will discuss key events of the Reconquista before granting you 30 minutes of free time to explore the Sanctuary independently. You'll have the opportunity to visit the renowned Cave of La Santina and the resting place of Don Pelayo, the inaugural monarch of the Kingdom of Asturias.
Our journey will then lead us to Cangas de Onís, the prior capital of the Asturian realm. Here, enjoy a 30-minute guided stroll that will take you past the Chapel of the Holy Cross and the Roman bridge over the Sella River, notable for the Victory Cross that hangs from its central arch. Imagine the first Christian troops advancing across it!
To conclude our adventure, following 2 hours of leisurely time for exploring and dining, we will commence our return journey to your hotel, where we will part ways after an enriching 8.5-hour day.
