Guanajuato Mummy Museum Tickets
Description
By obtaining a ticket to the Mummy Museum in Guanajuato, you are set to uncover an intriguing display of mummified human remains sourced from a nearby cemetery.
Museum Overview
Established in 1969, this museum stands out as one of the most extraordinary attractions in Guanajuato. The collection is regarded as one of the finest globally and features a substantial exhibition of naturally mummified bodies that were removed from the historic Santa Paula Cemetery.
In contrast to the mummies from Ancient Egypt, which underwent various embalming techniques, the mummies found in Guanajuato have been preserved through natural processes influenced by local soil and environmental factors.
The ticket to the Mummy Museum allows you to wander through its permanent exhibits at your convenience, showcasing around one hundred mummified remains of individuals predominantly from the 19th and early 20th centuries.
Among the prominent displays within the museum are:
- The mummy of Remigio Leroy: The first body discovered during an exhumation in 1865, this was a French doctor whose unpaid grave fees led to his mummification being uncovered.
- The smallest mummy in the world: This is the mummified fetus, estimated to be about 24 weeks gestation, found preserved alongside its mother.
- Original burial attire: Numerous remains still possess the clothes, shoes, lace, or shrouds that were used during their burial in the 19th and 20th centuries.
The museum also includes several audiovisual rooms that provide insights into the historical context surrounding the Santa Paula Cemetery, the geological circumstances that allowed for mummification, and the anthropological relevance of the exhibits.
