Mong Kok Tour
Description
Uncover a hidden perspective of Hong Kong on this walking tour of Mong Kok. Although the city is famed as a global financial hub, an entirely different narrative unfolds away from the spotlight. This guided journey through Mong Kok offers a profound understanding of the housing crisis and the social disparities impacting one of the most affluent cities worldwide.
The Underbelly of Hong Kong: Mong Kok
At the appointed hour, we will gather at Prince Edward Station to confront the housing challenges in Hong Kong. From this meeting point, we will investigate the reasons behind the city's status as having one of the globe's most exorbitant and least accessible real estate markets. Interestingly, a family of three may reside in accommodations as limited as a mere 10 square meters (107 sq ft).
During our expedition, we will navigate Portland Street, where the juxtaposition of traditional four-story structures and contemporary thirty-story skyscrapers illustrates the architectural transformation taking place in the city. This dichotomy serves as a vivid representation of how urban development is reshaping Hong Kong's communities.
Next, we will visit a subdivided housing unit on Cedar Street, allowing you to gain a firsthand perspective on life in these compact living quarters. You’ll discover how escalating costs and limited space force numerous families into precarious living situations, including the infamous cage houses, which are essentially cages for people.
We will then make our way to Lui Seng Chun, a historical site where we’ll enjoy herbal tea while listening to locals sharing their experiences of coping with the ongoing real estate crisis. The personal narratives of those striving for adequate housing amidst profound inequality will leave you astonished.
Continuing on our walking tour, we will stroll along Lai Chi Kok Road and Boundary Street, unveiling further instances of subdivided living that often remain hidden in plain sight. As we examine the various forms of these extreme residences, we will discuss how gentrification is swiftly altering the landscape of the city’s most disadvantaged areas.
Our final stop will be Hai Tan Street, where we will reflect on the impact of land sales on the low income tax in Hong Kong, while the issue of social inequality further escalates.
We will conclude this 2-2.5 hour experience at Sham Shui Po Station, equipped with newfound insights into the harsh realities endured by numerous residents of Hong Kong.
