Churubamba & Papahuasi Valley Excursion
Description
Embark on an enriching journey through the historic and culturally significant valleys of Huánuco, specifically Churubamba and Papahuasi, including a visit to an exquisite colonial hacienda.
Excursion to Churubamba & Papahuasi Valley
Your adventure begins at 8 am with a pickup from your Huánuco hotel, embarking along the scenic left bank of the Huallaga River towards the Papahuasi Valley, a site integral to the pre-Inca era.
As we navigate this stunning valley, our first port of call is the captivating town of Churubamba. Here, we will explore the district museum, which houses artifacts from the Papahuasi culture and other ancient civilizations, including the remarkable Papahuasi mummies.
Continuing our exploration, we will visit the Church of Santa Cruz, a 17th-century edifice linked to Father Alonso de Abad, known for discovering the renowned Boquerón del Padre Abad canyon. This stop will provide insight into the legacy of this Franciscan monk and his impact on the region.
Next, we will pass the seven colonial chapels adjacent to the Church of Santa Cruz in Churubamba. These chapels symbolize the seven falls of Christ, a significant aspect during Huánuco's Holy Week celebrations.
Among these chapels, we will find the Church of San Juan Bautista in Cascay, the Church of San Pedro in Utao, and the Church of San Nicolás in Tambogan, all originating from the 17th century and holding remnants of the conquest. In the Church of San Pedro, an exhibit of traditional garments and Quechua crafts awaits discovery.
Our journey progresses to a trout farm, where we will gain insights into the local trout farming techniques. Following this, we will explore the colonial hacienda of Quenra, delving into the lives of colonial landowners from the 1200s during our guided tour of the estate and its agricultural lands.
To conclude our excursion, we will return to Huánuco, where we will drop you off at your hotel around 2 pm.
