Pisagua Day Trip
Description
Embark on a captivating day trip to explore one of the prominent coastal towns in Tarapacá: Pisagua. This journey offers insight into the War of the Pacific, a significant conflict that unfolded in the 19th century across South America.
Pisagua Day Excursion
We will collect you from your hotel in Iquique between 8 and 9 am to commence our journey northward to Pisagua.
This coastal gem, nestled in the Chilean region of Tarapacá, played a crucial role during the War of the Pacific between 1879 and 1884, when Chile faced an alliance of Peru and Bolivia.
Our exploration will delve into the town's historical significance as we uncover the events surrounding the Battle of San Francisco (or Dolores), a key moment in the Tarapacá campaign. We'll observe the remnants of this battle, including a visit to the seaside cemetery adorned with its wooden crosses.
The itinerary will lead us to the monument honoring the landing and military actions at Pisagua on November 2, 1879. We will also explore the broader history of the town, followed by a stroll to appreciate its significance in the saltpetre industry. Along the way, marvel at the charming 19th-century wooden structures that define the area.
A break at a local restaurant will offer the chance to enjoy a delightful lunch, where you can taste the regional cuisine. After our meal, we will continue to uncover more about the history of Pisagua. Historically serving as a detention center in the 20th century, it now stands as a symbol of human rights advocacy.
As our day comes to a close, we will return you to your hotel in Iquique, with an expected drop-off around 7 pm.
