Day Trip Overview

If you’re curious to explore one of the most significant Indigenous communities in northeastern Brazil, we will pick you up from your hotel in João Pessoa at the scheduled time and set off towards the Potiguara Indigenous Reserve. Let the adventure begin!

Our travel time is approximately 2 hours and 15 minutes, during which you'll enjoy views of Paraíba's coastline and lush landscapes while we delve into the tradition and history of the Potiguara Indigenous people. Expect insights into the ancient Tupi language, along with a rich tapestry of dances, ceremonies, and artistic expressions.

Our first stop will be at the ruins of the Church of Saint Michael the Archangel, constructed by Jesuit missionaries in the 17th century. Inside, we’ll reveal the narrative surrounding the enslavement of Indigenous communities and their coerced adoption of Christianity. After this, we will head to the picturesque Gozo River, flanked by lush tropical foliage and safeguarded by over 50 Indigenous families.

Next, we will visit one of the villages, allowing you the chance to enjoy a meal if you choose. Once refreshed, we will proceed to Aldeia São Francisco, regarded as the primary village. Here, you will observe daily life in the community and visit the gathering space known as the Oca, which serves as a venue for meetings, celebrations, and traditional dances.
