Ascent of Mount Pico
Our adventure begins at the Casa da Montanha visitor centre, the starting point for our climbing expedition on Mount Pico. Did you know that this volcano reaches an impressive 2,351 meters, marking it as the tallest summit in the Azores and all of Portugal?
After gathering together, we'll go through essential safety briefings before embarking on our ascent. Let’s set off!
We will begin our climb at a steady pace that accommodates everyone in the group. Expect the entire trek to take around seven to eight hours.
As we ascend Mount Pico, you’ll be treated to stunning views of the landscape that change as we rise in elevation. You will encounter a variety of flora, from holly bushes to resilient cedar trees that thrive in the volcano’s challenging environment. Upon reaching the summit, provided that the clouds are kind, you will be rewarded with a glimpse of the distinctive scenery of the Azores archipelago from the pinnacle.
Essential Information
- To take part in this climb, participants should be in excellent physical condition. The trek is not advisable for children under 13 years old or individuals over 65. Those over 65 who engage in regular fitness activities must supply supplementary medical documentation to validate their suitability for this experience.
- Avoid any diving activities within the 24 hours prior to participation.
- Accessing the summit is contingent on weather conditions, safety factors, and the judgment of the guide.

On the day of the activity, we'll meet at Casa da Montanha (Caminho Florestal nº 9 Candelária, 9950-000 Madalena, Portugal). Please be at the meeting point 10 minutes before the activity starts.

- Since this is an activity that requires some physical activity, it's essential to wear footwear suitable for mountain hiking, running shoes are not valid.
- To participate in this activity, you must be in very good physical condition. The route is not recommended for children under 13 or for people over 65. If you are over 65 and engage in regular physical activity, you will need to provide additional medical documentation to justify your participation in the activity.
- You must not have engaged in any diving activities in the previous 24 hours.
- Reaching the summit is always subject to weather conditions, safety considerations, and the guide’s professional assessment.
