Montevideo Uruguayan Mate Workshop
Description
Immerse yourself in a genuine encounter in Montevideo through this Uruguayan mate workshop, where you will explore the preparation of this traditional beverage and its fascinating background.
Workshop Overview
We will gather at the designated time in front of a local residence situated on Acevedo Díaz Street, conveniently close to the Tres Cruces Terminal. For those unfamiliar with mate, it is a culturally significant drink resembling tea, enjoyed through a metallic straw. Prepare for an enjoyable experience!
Embraced by the warmth of Uruguayan culture, we will kick off the mate workshop. More than just a drink, mate embodies a ceremony that binds generations. It is commonly shared in circles, handed from one person to another, symbolizing a bond of friendship and community.
As we dive into the preparation, you will learn to select the ideal yerba (mate leaves), heat the water to the optimal temperature, and craft both bitter and sweet mate without scorching the leaves. The hallmark of a well-made mate is its foam and fragrance.
Following this, we will reach the eagerly awaited moment: the tasting session. While savoring the mate, we will share stories and uncover how this tradition thrives in Uruguay, Argentina, Paraguay, and southern Brazil.
The experience will further delight your palate as we sample six different types of homemade alfajores (scrumptious cookies with various fillings), all featuring authentic Uruguayan dulce de leche (caramel spread). Indulge in varieties such as cornstarch, white chocolate, semi-sweet chocolate, red fruit jam, and the distinctive 'pinitos' (chocolate-coated cookies filled with dulce de leche)—an exquisite complement to the freshly brewed mate!
We will conclude this enriching activity and bid farewell after a fulfilling hour and a half.
