Museum of Cultures of Oaxaca Guided Tour
Description
Join us on this guided exploration of the Museum of Oaxacan Cultures as we uncover the histories of the remarkable civilizations that once thrived in this region, embarking on an enlightening journey through time!
Activity Overview
Our adventure begins at the designated meeting point, located at the entrance of the Temple of Santo Domingo, situated in central Oaxaca. Directly across from us lies the Museum of Oaxacan Cultures, housed within the historic convent of Santo Domingo de Guzmán. Let’s get started!
This impressive edifice, a notable example of 16th-century architecture, transitioned into a museum in 1993. Visitors will be captivated by its colonial features, including grand cloisters and intricate decorations that reveal the splendor of its past.
We will kick off the tour by delving into the sections dedicated to the earliest cultures of Oaxaca. Here we’ll dive into the rich legacies of the Zapotec and Mixtec civilizations, two pivotal societies of Mesoamerica.
Our journey will take us next into the exhibit showcasing the region's most remarkable archaeological artifacts. We will have the opportunity to marvel at an extraordinary collection of pre-Hispanic artifacts, including the renowned Treasures of Tomb 7 from Monte Alban. These golden items, ceramics, and sculpted figures offer a glimpse into the lifestyles, beliefs, and customs of these ancient peoples.
The tour will proceed into the sections focusing on the conquest, the colonial period, and the revolutionary history of Oaxaca. Here, we will examine the transformative impact of the Spanish arrival on the region and how the key social movements that shaped modern Oaxaca developed. It’s truly a voyage through the ages!
Our exploration culminates at the Historical Library, a sanctuary filled with ancient texts and manuscripts that reflect Oaxaca’s vibrant literary heritage. If time permits, you may wish to extend your visit with a trip to the exhibition hall featuring temporary displays.
Ultimately, our comprehensive guided tour of the Museum of Oaxacan Cultures will span approximately 2 to 2.5 hours.
