Tlacolula, San Jerónimo Tlacochahuaya & Yagul Day Trip
Your adventure begins at 10 am with a pickup from your Oaxaca hotel, setting the stage for a captivating day.
Our first destination is the San Jerónimo Tlacochahuaya convent, established by the Dominicans in 1558. Upon arrival, you will have the opportunity to explore this ecclesiastical complex. Highlights include the intricate 17th-century polychrome altarpiece and the distinctive bellows organ, the sole one in the region. The renowned writer and friar Juan de Córdova, known for his contributions to Zapotec literature and culture, resided in these historic rooms.
We will then proceed to visit the remarkable Municipal Presidency of San Jeronimo Tlacochahuaya Palace. This grand structure features noteworthy characteristics, including its elegant portico and the decorative arches on the façade.
Next, we journey to the Yagul archaeological site, where you can admire mural paintings found in various tombs, the remains of a significant ceremonial center, and the largest ball game court in Oaxaca, alongside a hilltop fortress thought to date back to 500 BC.
Our final destination is the vibrant Tlacolula de Matamoros market. Here, we will engage with local Oaxacan vendors, discovering the rich traditions and offerings of the market. You’ll witness lively bartering between customers and sellers, immerse yourself in the sounds of the Zapotec language, and have the chance to savor regional delicacies, such as refreshing sorbet or the renowned charcoal-grilled meats.
