Our journey begins at Plaza de Alfonso II El Casto, where we will kick off this intimate exploration of the Cathedral of San Salvador.
As we embark on this tour of the Oviedo Cathedral, commonly referred to as Sancta Ovetensis, our first stop will be the magnificent High Altarpiece, a remarkable 16th-century piece recognized as one of Spain's most significant artworks.
Next, we will enter the Cámara Santa (Holy Chamber), where you can admire the Santa Sudario (Holy Shroud) alongside other invaluable treasures like the Victory Cross. Our exploration will continue through the cloister and the crypt of Saint Leocadia, each disclosing the cathedral's deep-rooted legacy.
We will also make a stop at the Pilgrims' Cemetery, the one location offering a unique view of the Gothic cathedral's apse and the Sala Capitular (Chapter House). This area once housed the former General Assembly of the Principality of Asturias, enriching our experience.
Additionally, discussions will touch upon the Camino Primitivo de Santiago, which commences in Oviedo, and the local saying, "Quien va a Santiago y no a San Salvador, visita al criado y no al Señor," emphasizing the importance of San Salvador in the pilgrimage.
We will also explore significant chapels such as that dedicated to Saint Eulalia, the patroness of the diocese, the city of Oviedo, and the entire Principality of Asturias.
