Covadonga & Cangas de Onís Private Day Trip
Description
Embarking on this exclusive day excursion to Covadonga and Cangas de Onís allows you to explore Lakes Enol and Ercina, the Basilica, and the iconic Roman bridge spanning the Sella River, accompanied by a dedicated guide. Prepare to be enchanted by the stunning vistas of the Cantabrian Mountains!
Details of the Day Trip
Are you prepared to discover a gem within the Cantabrian Mountains? Our journey begins with a pickup from your accommodation, leading us on a 1.5-hour drive toward the western massif of the Picos de Europa National Park. From the outset, the scenic views will undoubtedly capture your heart!
Upon reaching the breathtaking lakes of Covadonga, we will first visit the Entrelagos viewpoint, where we can pause to admire Lakes Ercina and Enol. Interesting fact: beneath Lake Enol lies a statue of the Virgin of Covadonga, submerged as a protective emblem.
Continuing our journey, we will make our way down to the Basilica of Santa María Real de Covadonga, an impressive neo-Romanesque temple set against the backdrop of the Asturian mountains.
Once at the basilica, we will discuss significant events from the Reconquista period and then allow you 30 minutes for independent exploration of the Sanctuary. You’ll have the opportunity to visit the revered Cave of La Santina and the resting place of Don Pelayo, the inaugural monarch of the Kingdom of Asturias.
Next, our route will take us to Cangas de Onís, renowned as the former capital of the Asturian kingdom. There, we’ll engage in a guided walk lasting 30 minutes that will lead us past the Chapel of the Holy Cross and the historic Roman bridge over the Sella River, from which the central arch displays the Victory Cross. Imagine crossing it as the first Christian forces moved through this significant area!
Ultimately, following 2 hours of leisure time for exploration and dining, we will commence our journey back to your hotel, concluding this 8.5-hour day with heartfelt farewells.
