Irati Forest & Ochagavía Day Trip
Description
Join us on a captivating day trip to explore the Irati Forest and the charming village of Ochagavía, where you’ll experience the enchanting beauty of a Pyrenean forest nestled in the Salazar Valley.
Details of the Day Excursion
We will commence our adventure from Pamplona bus station at the scheduled time, heading towards the Navarrese Pyrenees. Leaving the Pamplona basin behind, we will embark on a picturesque drive of about 1 hour and 45 minutes before arriving in the stunning Salazar Valley. The breathtaking views will captivate you right from the start!
Our first stop will be the Irati Forest, renowned as one of Europe's most pristine beech forests. Here, we will stroll along its well-marked paths, indulging in the rich biodiversity that flourishes within. Remarkably, this forest has preserved its natural essence since the Middle Ages. As we walk, we will follow the tranquil flow of the Irati and Urtxuria rivers, which have historically played a vital role in local timber rafting traditions.
After spending 1.5 hours in this natural wonder, we will continue our journey and arrive in Ochagavía within 30 minutes. This picturesque village, acclaimed as one of the most beautiful in Navarre, is characterized by its traditional Pyrenean architecture, featuring robust stone houses and sloped roofs designed to endure heavy snow fall.
Embarking on a 45-minute guided tour of the historic center, we will cross the idyllic stone bridge spanning the River Anduña. Along the way, we will visit the Church of St John the Evangelist and the renowned sculpture known as the Enara of Ochagavía.
Interestingly, Ochagavía served as a key waypoint on transhumance trails that connected Navarre with Aragón. Following our tour, you will enjoy 45 minutes of free time to have lunch and discover the village at your own pace.
As our day draws to a close, we will return to Pamplona, where we will conclude our experience after 7 hours at the initial meeting point.
