About the Arc de Triomphe
Legend has it that Napoleon Bonaparte, perhaps feeling insecure about his height, sought to create a monument that would evoke similar sentiments in others. Following his triumph in the Battle of Austerlitz in 1805, he seized the moment to commission a grand structure. This monument not only celebrated the victory but also aimed to make those who admired its grandeur feel diminutive in comparison. Thus, the Arc de Triomphe was conceived, although ironically, Napoleon did not witness its completion.
Proudly situated at the end of the famous Champs-Élysées, the Arc de Triomphe features inscriptions of Napoleon's key victories. Beneath these names rests the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, where an eternal flame honors those who perished anonymously in the World Wars.
