About the Arc de Triomphe
According to history, Napoleon Bonaparte sought to address his concerns about his height in an innovative manner. Following the French victory at the Battle of Austerlitz in 1805, he commissioned the creation of a grand monument. This structure was intended not only to celebrate the victory but to evoke a sense of humility in those who viewed its magnificent architecture. Thus, the project for the Arc de Triomphe was born, though it is noteworthy that Napoleon did not witness its completion.
Situated triumphantly at the end of the famed Champs-Élysées, the Arc de Triomphe bears the names of Napoleon’s key victories etched into its facade. Beneath these inscriptions rests the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, adorned with an eternal flame honoring those who perished without identification in both World Wars.
Opening Hours
The Arc de Triomphe welcomes visitors during the following hours:
- April 1 to September 30: Wednesdays to Mondays from 10 am to 11 pm; Tuesdays from 11 am to 11 pm
- October 1 to March 31: Wednesdays to Mondays from 10 am to 10:30 pm; Tuesdays from 11 am to 10:30 pm
The final entry is allowed 45 minutes before closing.
For reasons of safety and crowd control, the Arc de Triomphe may close earlier during peak visitation times. To optimize your experience, it is advisable to avoid visiting at the end of the day. Arriving after 11 am may help you bypass the early morning crowds.

Days with modified hours:
- October 15: opening at 11:30 am
- Every weekend, including Fridays, opening at 11 am
- From December 19 to January 4: opening at 11 am
Days with adjusted closing times:
- November 11: no access in the morning. Final entry is 45 minutes prior to closure
- December 24: closes at 4 pm, with last admission 45 minutes before closure
- December 31: closes at 4 pm, with last admission 45 minutes before closure
Free Admission
Entry to the Arc de Triomphe is complimentary for the following categories:
- Young individuals from the European Union aged 18 to 25
- Children under 18 years of age, irrespective of nationality
Moreover, free admission is granted to all visitors on the first Sunday of each month from January to March and from November to December. The 3rd weekend of September also permits free entry.
To qualify for the free admission mentioned above, individuals must visit the site's ticket office and present a valid document that confirms eligibility for a complimentary ticket.
Elevator Maintenance Information
Currently, the elevator at the Arc de Triomphe is undergoing repairs. As a result, access to the panoramic terrace is only available by climbing the stairs, which consist of 284 steps.

The closest metro stops to the Arc de Triomphe are the following: Argentine and George V (line 1, the yellow line); Ternes (line 2, the blue line); Kléber (line 6, the light green line). You can also arrive by RER train at the Charles de Gaulle stop on line A.
Important: the lift to climb up to the panoramic terrace, which is reserved exclusively for people with reduced mobility, is closed due to maintenance work.

Free Admission
Admission to the Arc de Triomphe is free for the following individuals:
- Young people from the European Union between 18 and 25 years old.

Admission is also free for everyone on the first Sunday of the month between January 1 and March 31, and between November 1 and December 31. Similarly, the 3rd weekend of September is free.
