Description

Experience the pioneering example of Gothic architecture by visiting the impressive Medieval Basilica of Saint-Denis, situated on the fringes of Paris.

Reasons to Explore the Basilica of Saint-Denis

With pointed arches, rib-vaulted ceilings, and captivating stained glass windows, the Basilica of Saint-Denis is a testament to the defining characteristics of Gothic architecture. This abbey church from the Medieval period is recognized as the initial structure representing this style, which would later influence various regions in Western Europe from the 12th to the 15th century.

Your ticket grants entry to the Basilica of Saint-Denis, allowing you to delve into its remarkable interior at your own pace, where the Royal necropolis can be found. This location serves as the burial site for numerous historic French monarchs, and the elaborate tombs present within are certainly noteworthy. Be sure to view the funerary monuments of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette, pivotal figures in the French Revolution.

Beyond the exquisite sculptures adorning the Basilica, the stunning stained glass is a highlight, particularly the rose window, flooding the space with vibrant hues. The interplay of light enhances the stunning aesthetics of the cathedral.

Other significant features you should not overlook include the organ, choir, and the various chapels that adjoin the main structure. To round off your visit, consider stopping by the Fabrique de la flèche. Located at the base of the monument, it provides insights into the fascinating history behind the Basilica's construction.
