The Origins of the Paris Catacombs
If you are curious about skulls and human skeletal remains, visiting this underground city of the dead offers a captivating glimpse into a seldom-seen aspect of Paris.
But what led to the formation of the Catacombs? By the end of the 18th century, the cemeteries in Paris were overrun, creating significant public health concerns. In response, the city officials initiated the transfer of skeletal remains from various graveyards into the tunnels below. Thus, the catacombs were established, welcoming visitors since 1809.
During your exploration, you'll navigate the expansive network of tunnels. You will encounter the ossuaries containing the remains of over six million individuals. The bones are thoughtfully arranged along the walls, and you may also notice macabre artistic displays crafted from the skeletal structures, revealing an often overlooked yet somber aspect of the city.
