Kari Kari Lagoons Hike
Description
Experience the stunning Andean scenery surrounding Potosí on this trek to the Kari Kari lagoons and the iconic Cerro Rico!
Kari Kari Lagoons Trek
Our adventure begins at 8:45 am on Ayacucho Street, Potosí, where we’ll gather before embarking on our hike. We will board a bus taking us away from the urban landscape, allowing us to observe how the architecture transitions into a pre-colonial style as we approach the majestic mountains.
As we travel, we'll also glimpse the exterior of the mineral refining facilities linked to the local mines.
Upon arrival, we will commence a brief 15-minute ascent to reach the Kari Kari lagoons: San Ildefonso, Chalviri, San Rafael, and San Pablo, constructed back in the 16th century.
Soak in the breathtaking views, including the famed Cerro Rico, while connecting with the diverse Andean flora and fauna. Our hike will continue to the mountain summit, standing at an impressive altitude of 5000 meters.
Here, we will take a moment to unwind and enjoy a picnic at the Apacheta viewpoint, where you can relish one of the most awe-inspiring panoramas of Potosí. After our break, we will initiate our descent back down the mountain.
At the trail's origin, transportation will be waiting to bring us back to Potosí, concluding our journey at approximately 4 pm.
Extend Your Experience
For those looking to enrich their adventure, there’s an option to add another day. Upon reaching the mountaintop, we'll settle down for a dinner and an overnight stay with a traditional Apacheta family, immersing ourselves in their unpretentious lifestyle. Dinner will feature a warm soup followed by a hearty main dish.
The following morning, we will wake early for breakfast and then proceed with our hike towards the Chaqui hot springs.
There, we will immerse ourselves in the healing waters and enjoy a two-course lunch before returning to Potosí by transport, arriving back at approximately 3 pm.
