Rio Afro Culture + Samba in Pedra do Sal Free Tour
Description
During this complimentary tour exploring Rio de Janeiro's African heritage, participants will uncover how this cultural influence is manifest in the city's landscape and is prominently celebrated during the iconic Rio de Janeiro Carnival.
Tour Overview
While the Atlantic Ocean geographically separates Africa from Brazil, the vibrant music, unique architecture, and rich arts of Rio convey a different narrative. Our journey begins at a designated meeting point in central Rio de Janeiro as we delve into the celebration of the city's African cultural influences.
The first destination on our route is Praça Mauá, where the innovative Museum of Tomorrow captures attention. This marvel, designed by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava, serves as a beacon of the city’s future, while simultaneously echoing the profound African heritage that has shaped Rio's evolution.
As we make our way toward Largo de São Francisco da Prainha and onward to Pedra do Sal, participants will discover this part of the Saúde neighbourhood once recognized as a former quilombo village, rooted in African history. This area boasts a variety of urban graffiti murals that commemorate its rich past, and it resonates with the carnival's lively rhythms as well!
After an engaging 2.5-hour exploration, this complimentary tour will wrap up near the historic Valongo Pier.
