This catacombs tour takes you outside of Rome on a half-day trip to the Basilica of Saint Sebastian and its Catacombs. The route includes a walk along the impressive Appian Way, one of the oldest Roman roads.

Meet your guide near the San Giovanni Metro Station in Piazzale Appio at the scheduled time. Board an air-conditioned coach and depart with a small group to the Basilica of St Sebastian.

At the basilica, view Lorenzo Bernini's final sculpture, the Salvator Mundi, before continuing along the Ancient Appian Way. Here, notable Roman sites include the Mausoleum of Cecilia Metella and the Villa of Maxentius complex, which features the Mausoleum of Romulus and the Circus of Maxentius.

Visit the catacombs for insights into Rome's history. On Wednesdays, the tour explores the Catacombs of St. Sebastian; on other days, the Catacombs of St. Callixtus are visited, with possible visits to the Catacombs of St. Domitilla depending on availability.

After the final visit, return to the bus for the ride back to Rome, arriving 3.5 hours later.

• On Mondays, the Villa of Maxentius is closed; it will be viewed externally.
