Rome Underground Tour
Description
Discover the hidden depths of Rome during this excursion through the underground network. Stroll along the historic Appian Way and Caffarella as you explore the obscure aspects of the Eternal City.
A Journey Below the Surface
Above ground, Rome is rich in cultural opportunities; however, this archaeological adventure allows you to explore the city’s secretive and intriguing underground realm. This network has historically contributed to the city's construction, and on this in-depth tour, we will unveil its hidden wonders.
Join us at the arranged time adjacent to Cancelliere Caffé, where our journey into the shadows of The Appian Way and Caffarella will commence, revealing a different aspect of the Eternal City.
As one of Rome’s most extensive underground systems, this maze beneath the Italian capital stretches from the Aurelian Roman Wall to Via dell’Almone. While we delve into the historic quarry that once provided materials for construction, we’ll gain valuable understanding of the foundational elements instrumental in forming the city of Rome. Indeed, the construction was a gradual process.
Next, we will visit a site that historically housed ancient mushroom farming, which leads us to the highlight of the tour: the catacombs of Rome. As we navigate this fascinating historical area, we'll uncover the ways in which this space has evolved over the years.
Our exploration then takes us to the recently restored Mithraeum, the sacred site located beneath the Appian Way. This area has strong ties to the worship of Mithras, the sun deity.
Rising back to the surface, we will conclude our tour on a festive note with a wine tasting reminiscent of Marcus Gavius Apicius, a renowned Roman gourmet from the first century.
After a thorough two-hour archaeological journey, we will wrap up this engaging experience.
