Description

The Gallery of Maps and the stunning Pietà await on this guided exploration of the Vatican Museums, the Sistine Chapel, and St. Peter's Basilica. Experience the essence of Vatican City.

Tour Overview

Covering only 0.44 km² (0.16 mi²), Vatican City is recognized as the smallest independent state in the world. Within this compact area, visitors can find an exceptional wealth of artistic and historical treasures. Are you ready to embark on this journey?

This detailed Vatican tour will commence at the designated meeting point nearby the microstate, with our first destination being the Vatican Museums.

After exploring the highlights of the museum's permanent exhibitions, we will proceed to the Sistine Chapel and subsequently to St. Peter’s Basilica, where this immersive experience will culminate. The entire excursion typically lasts between 3 to 3.5 hours.

Sites We Will Explore

Here’s a breakdown of what to expect on our Vatican tour, including the sequential stops within the world's smallest country:

Vatican Museums

We'll begin our visit at the Vatican Museums, home to an unparalleled art collection. Our journey will kick off at the Courtyard of the Pineapple, offering a brief introduction to Vatican City.

Next, we move into the Pio-Clementino Museum, where we will encounter:

  • Laocoön and His Sons, a striking Hellenistic sculpture from the 1st century B.C.
  • Ancient Roman sarcophagi and busts representing emperors
  • The Belvedere Torso and Apollo: Masterpieces that greatly influenced Michelangelo
  • Artifacts including mosaic artworks and reliefs from antiquity.

Our visit continues through three major galleries within the Vatican Museums:

  • Gallery of Maps: Featuring 40 large-scale maps of Italy, crafted by the Dominican friar Ignazio Danti between 1580 and 1585, during the papacy of Gregory XIII.
  • Gallery of Tapestries: A display of magnificent tapestries mainly originating from Flanders, greatly inspired by the artistic creations of Raphael Sanzio.
  • Gallery of Candelabra: Here, one can find not just candelabra but also classical sculptures, sarcophagi, and detailed reliefs.

Sistine Chapel

After our exploration of the Vatican Museums, we will enter the Sistine Chapel. Constructed in the mid-15th century under Pope Sixtus IV, this chapel later saw its walls adorned by Michelangelo Buonarroti in the early 1500s, producing the famous portrayals of the Creation of Adam and the Last Judgment.

During our time here, we will delve into the intricate details of these iconic works while also discussing the papal election process that occurs within these walls.

St. Peter's Basilica

Finally, we will access St. Peter’s Basilica from the Sistine Chapel using priority entry. Inside this monumental church, we’ll have the opportunity to admire two significant creations:

  • The Pietà: A remarkable sculpture sculpted by Michelangelo at the tender age of 24
  • Bernini’s Baldachin: Positioned above the High Altar, it marks the resting place of Saint Peter.

The entire Vatican tour will last approxidamente between 3 and 3.5 hours and will conclude within the basilica itself, allowing you to wander and discover additional details at your own pace once the guided portion ends.
