Day Trip to the Lampivaara Amethyst Mine

At the scheduled time, participants will gather at 29 Maakuntakatu before boarding a bus for a journey northward from Rovaniemi. Following an 80-mile (120-kilometre) ride, the charming Lappish village of Luosto, home to the Lampivaara amethyst mine, will come into view.

To access the summit where the mine is situated, you will hop aboard a snowcat, a specialized vehicle designed for navigating through snowy terrains along a picturesque route winding through Finland's splendid snow-blanketed forests.

Upon reaching the peak, you will disembark from the snowcat and walk towards the amethyst mine, a site with a remarkable history spanning over 2,000 million years. A guided tour awaits, during which you will gain insights into the purple stone, its characteristics, and its various applications. As you explore the mine, take a moment to appreciate the breathtaking violet hue of this shimmering quartz and delve into the mine's storied past.

Additionally, you will have a chance to explore the excavation area, where you can dig for precious gems in the frost-laden Finnish soil. The amethysts you uncover will serve as mementos from one of the few gem mines globally that welcomes visitors.
