Edzná, San Luis Carpizo Hacienda + Champotón Day Trip
Description
Join us on this excursion to Edzná and its historic haciendas, where you'll delve into three remarkable destinations in the Mexican southeast. This journey spans the rich Mayan culture, the enduring colonial heritage, and the exquisite culinary delights of the sea. Engage with history, culture, and traditional flavours!
Excursion Overview
We will collect you from your hotel in San Francisco de Campeche at the designated time and then embark towards Edzná, a significant Mayan archaeological site situated on the Yucatán peninsula. Are you prepared to uncover one of the region's most remarkable historical treasures?
After approximately an hour's journey, we will reach this ancient Mayan city, renowned for its advanced hydraulic systems that facilitated its growth. Our 2-hour guided exploration of the archaeological site will commence as we visit the Great Acropolis and the iconic Five Storey Building, a grand edifice that served dual purposes as both a royal residence and an astronomical observatory.
As we wander through ceremonial structures, we'll unveil how the ancient Maya oriented their buildings with celestial bodies for the purposes of timekeeping and sacred rituals. Fascinatingly, this site thrived as a pivotal political and religious hub for over a millennium—prepare to be amazed!
Our next destination will be the historic Ex Hacienda San Luis Carpizo, a beautiful remnant from the henequen boom era, affectionately known as Yucatán's "green gold." Established in the 19th century, this estate epitomizes the wealth and agricultural activity of its time when henequen and sugar cane dominated the rural economy.
Currently, the hacienda hosts facilities for the Ministry of the Navy, offering a unique juxtaposition of historical significance and contemporary use. We will spend an hour exploring its gardens, hallways, and former workshops while we delve into tales of labor, wealth, and evolution—a genuine glimpse into history!
Lastly, we will travel to Champotón, a lovely coastal town on the Gulf of Mexico, celebrated for its vibrant gastronomy. Here, you will indulge in a meal featuring the finest dishes of Campeche's cuisine: fresh seafood, fish with garlic mojo, octopus in its ink, along with other traditional culinary creations from local chefs.
Following lunch, you will have some leisure time to explore the boardwalk, unwind by the shore, or capture photographs of the stunning coastal view—an idyllic conclusion to your day!
After spending 2.5 hours in Champotón, our journey back to Campeche will conclude as we drop you off at your hotel following a fulfilling 9-hour adventure.
