Description

Amidst the turmoil of the Bosnian War, an extensive underground passage measuring 800 meters was constructed as a crucial escape route from Sarajevo. This tour invites you to explore the profound history of this essential structure, known as the Tunnel of Hope.

Tunnel of Hope Tour

Your journey will commence at Zelenih Beretki 30 at the designated meeting time, where we will set off towards one of the capital's most significant sites.

As we traverse the city, we will navigate through Sniper Avenue, once a perilous area during the conflict where mere pedestrians risked being shot. Indeed, this street was considered one of the most dangerous in the world at that time. Our path will also lead us past the Markale market, the site of a devastating massacre amid the siege of Sarajevo.

Continuing on, we will observe the Presidency building, a pivotal location in the political landscape of the war, as well as the RTV Dom, the broadcasting center that kept citizens informed during critical security crises. Throughout our exploration, we will discuss the layout of the communist-era neighborhoods, shedding light on how these suburbs encapsulate Sarajevo's contemporary narrative.

Upon concluding our reflections on these haunting historical milestones, we will reach the entrance to the Sarajevo Tunnel, situated 5 meters (16 feet) below ground, which was established in 1993 as an escape route during wartime. This 800-meter-long (2,624 feet) passageway, recognized as the Tunnel of Hope, served as a vital link for Sarajevo during the siege, facilitating the transport of food, medicine, and essential supplies to the city. Within the museum, you will uncover the intriguing details of its construction and hear poignant accounts from those who experienced this tumultuous period. It’s noteworthy that individuals had to don a mask while traversing due to poor ventilation.

Our tour will culminate with a return to the original meeting point, marking the end of our 2.5-hour exploration.
