Skopje Free Walking Tour
Description
Join this free tour of Skopje to explore the rich history and intriguing facts about Macedonia's vibrant capital. A noteworthy highlight is its connection to Mother Teresa of Calcutta, who was born here.
Tour Details
The adventure begins at the scheduled time, where we will convene in front of the Hotel Marriott located in the central square. Once everyone is gathered, we will kick off our free tour of Skopje. Let’s embark on this journey!
We'll first visit the impressive statue of Alexander the Great, towering at a height of 72 feet (22 meters) and weighing an impressive 40 tons. Here, we will share the backstory of this iconic equestrian sculpture and discuss the tension it has caused with Greece, which asserts that the warrior is part of its cultural heritage.
Our walk will then take us along a bustling pedestrian street to the Mother Teresa Memorial House?, inaugurated in 2009 as a tribute to Teresa of Calcutta, a Nobel Prize laureate born in Skopje in 1910. The house features an exhibition of photographs from her early years and includes a sculpture depicting her with family members.
Continuing our exploration, we will appreciate the Modernist-style buildings that emerged following the catastrophic 1963 earthquake. These structures were crafted by the renowned Japanese architect Kenz? Tange.
Our journey through the city’s history will lead us to notable locations like VMRO Square, the Italian and Spanish embassies, and the Old Bazaar. Nestled along the eastern banks of the Vardar River, the Old Bazaar is a delightful blend of Byzantine and predominantly Ottoman architecture, showcasing the city’s rich past.
We will conclude our sightseeing with a visit to the Skopje Fortress, the highest vantage point in the city, offering stunning scenic views. This is the perfect moment for capturing memorable photographs!
As our free tour wraps up, we will return to the starting point after approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes of exploration.
