Description

During this day excursion to Matka Canyon, you'll immerse yourself in one of the most breathtaking natural environments in North Macedonia and ascend to the impressive Millennium Cross, a monumental representation of Skopje. Prepare for an experience filled with culture, nature, and stunning vistas!

Day Trip Overview

Our adventure begins at the arranged meeting point at the Café & Bookstore Lette in Skopje, where we will board a bus for a brief 30-minute ride to the Vodno Mountain. Are you ready to uncover one of North Macedonia's extraordinary landscapes? Let's embark!

Upon arrival, we will board a cable car that takes us to the summit in just 10 minutes. Here stands the magnificent Millennium Cross, soaring at 216 feet (66 meters), making it one of the largest Christian monuments globally.

Constructed in 2002 to celebrate 2000 years of Christianity in the region, it has established itself as one of Skopje's key symbols. You'll have 1.5 hours to navigate the area and take in the breathtaking views over the capital from this exceptional vantage point.

Next, we'll visit the Church of Saint Panteleimon in Gorno Nerezi. This stunning Byzantine structure contains remarkable 12th-century frescoes widely regarded as some of the most beautiful in existence. This enchanting site is steeped in history and spirituality.

Our journey continues towards one of the nation's most iconic natural landmarks: the Matka Canyon. On our way, we'll pause for a delightful breakfast at a local bakery, where you can savor regional delicacies.

Once we reach our destination, you'll be captivated by this canyon, spanning over 12,355 acres (5,000 hectares), renowned for its sheer rocky cliffs, caves, and hidden medieval monasteries nestled within the foliage. Here, we'll take a brief tour of the Monastery of St. Andrews, a quaint religious site showcasing traditional architectural beauty.

This locale is also home to Lake Matka, recognized as the oldest artificial lake in Macedonia. You will have 2 hours of leisure time to wander its paths, investigate its caves, or simply unwind by the water's edge.

Finally, we will commence our return trip to Skopje, concluding our journey approximately 5 to 6 hours later at our initial meeting point.
