Explore the Rila Monastery
A visit to Bulgaria would be incomplete without experiencing the Rila Monastery. Our journey commences at Vasil Levski Square in Sofia, setting the stage for a venture into the Rila mountain range, the highest peaks in the Balkans. Throughout the ride, we will discuss interesting aspects of the nation’s natural features and geography, vital for a deeper appreciation of its history.
Upon reaching the Rila Monastery, you will have 2 hours to immerse yourself in this UNESCO World Heritage Site. This magnificent structure stands as one of the pinnacles of the Bulgarian Renaissance, and the beautifully crafted frescoes that illustrate biblical scenes and saintly lives are truly breathtaking. Don't miss the monastery's cloister and its museum, which houses the renowned Rafail's Cross—a jewel of Slavic cultural heritage.
Hiking to the Cave of Saint John of Rila
After your time at the monastery, we will proceed to the adjacent Cave of Saint John of Rila, located just 4 kilometers (2.48 miles) away, for a brief hike. This leisurely 15-minute trek will take you through a forest path within the National Park, enveloped by the serene beauty of the area.
Just before we reach the cave, we will stop at a small stone church that holds the saint’s tomb. The cave itself is significant as the very place where Saint John of Rila spent over seven years in solitude and devotion during the 10th century. As per local tradition, walking through the cave’s narrow opening signifies the removal of one's sins. This offers a truly unique spiritual journey within the Bulgarian wilderness!
Ultimately, after approximately 8 hours of enriching your spirit with the essence of Bulgaria's nature and culture, we will make our way back to Sofia.
Changes to Itinerary
Should adverse weather conditions arise, we may instead visit the Boyana Church or extend our exploration of the Rila Monastery.

Important information
The day of the activity, the group will meet in front of the Embassy of Slovakia on the Vasil Levski Square, located at Yanko Sakuzov Blvd 9, 1527 Sofia, Bulgaria. Please arrive at the meeting point 15 minutes before the tour is set to begin.
We recommend wearing hiking boots due to the terrain.
Itinerary Changes
In the event of adverse weather conditions, the walk to the Cave of Ivan Rilksi will be substituted with a visit to Boyana Church or a longer tour of Rila Monastery.
