Tokyo Traditional Tea Ceremony
Description
Embark on an authentic tea ceremony in Tokyo, where you'll learn the traditional method of preparing matcha while delving into the rich symbolism of the Japanese chanoyu.
Activity Details
Our gathering will commence at the Asakusa Tourist and Cultural Information Center, followed by a stroll to the designated venue featuring a traditional Japanese room specifically arranged for the practice of chanoyu, also referred to as the way of tea. This immersive experience will provide insights into the ceremonial art form, where the preparation of matcha transcends mere cooking, evolving into a comprehensive aesthetic discipline.
Before entering the room, we'll be introduced to the essential protocols for the ceremony. Once comfortably seated, we will receive an extensive explanation covering the significance of the ceremony, along with details about the ingredients and essential utensils used.
We'll familiarize ourselves with matcha, the finely milled green tea, and discover the traditional tools involved: the chawan (tea bowl), the chasen (bamboo whisk), and the chashaku, a small scoop used for measuring the tea powder.
Throughout the 40 minutes of this ceremony, we will observe the meticulous process of transforming tea leaves into a fine powder.
Under the guidance of an expert, we will prepare our own matcha, mastering the proper whisking technique to create a smooth emulsion topped with a delicate foam.
At the conclusion of our preparation, we will indulge in our tea accompanied by Japanese sweets, pending availability.
