Tunis Free Walking Tour
Description
Discover the highlights of Tunis, including the Cathedral of St. Vincent de Paul, the El-Zituna Mosque, and the vibrant Medina. This complimentary walking tour of the Tunisian capital offers an insightful glimpse into one of Northern Africa’s most captivating destinations.
Tour Overview
Your journey begins in Tunisia's capital at the designated meeting point outside the Théâtre municipal de Tunis, an impressive Art Nouveau edifice situated along the bustling Avenue Habib Bourguiba.
As you stroll along this avenue, often referred to as the Champs Elysées of Tunis, admire architectural treasures from the Colonial French era, relax in contemporary cafés, and gaze upon the notable Clock Tower. At the promenade’s conclusion, you’ll arrive at Independence Square, where you can appreciate the statue of Ibn Khaldoun, a pivotal figure in the history of sociology.
Adjacent to this monument, you'll find the facade of the Cathedral of St. Vincent de Paul, which stands as the largest Catholic church in the region. After delving into its rich history, we’ll proceed to the Central Market, where vibrant stalls overflow with spices and fresh produce.
Our next destination is the Medina of Tunis, which we will access via the Bab al-Bhar Door, also known as the Porte De France. Upon entering, immerse yourself in the charming winding lanes of this UNESCO World Heritage Site.
As we navigate through the Medina, we will visit the Souk El Attarine, famed for its enticing perfumes and spices, followed by the Souk El Berka, renowned for exquisite jewelry. Continuing to the heart of the Medina, we will stop at the Al-Zaytuna Mosque, or El-Zituna Mosque, one of the earliest mosques in Northern Africa. Here, we will take a moment to appreciate its exterior and enjoy a refreshing beverage at a nearby café.
To conclude our tour, we will walk by several madrasas, which are traditional Islamic schools, and finish our free walking tour of Tunis at Kasbah Square after approximately 2 hours and 45 minutes. At this location, you’ll observe the exterior of the Dar El Bey, known as the government palace, along with the Kasbah Mosque.
