Description

Your entry to Whitby Abbey invites you to step back into medieval England. Here, you will explore the abbey's rich past and uncover its connections to both the Anglican and Catholic faiths.

Description

Situated on the coastline, approximately 75 kilometers (46 miles) from York, the majestic ruins of Whitby Abbey leave a lasting impression and narrate tales from an extraordinary history spanning over 1,000 years.

Despite facing invasions, theft, bombings, and the dissolution by Henry VIII in the 16th century, the remaining structure of this Benedictine abbey has surprisingly stayed remarkably preserved.

Positioned atop a hill, the abbey offers breathtaking views of the North Sea and has historically been a key marker for sailors. Additionally, it has been suggested that the site inspired Bram Stoker's novel Dracula. These intriguing facts are among those you can discover through the informational displays at the visitor center.
