Walking Tour Overview
Commencing at Plaça de Catalunya, this engaging tour will reveal how the momentous 1936 coup d'état and its resulting effects impacted Barcelona, shedding light on the lives of its inhabitants during the subsequent dictatorship.
As we venture through this historical context, we will journey back to the 19th century to understand the origins of the Civil War. Discussion will encompass ideologies like anarchism and anticlericalism, while examining the stance of the Catalan bourgeoisie in relation to these movements.
Participants will discover where, how, and why the conflict unfolded, reflecting on the daily realities faced by Barcelonians during this sorrowful chapter of Spanish history. Traversing some of the city’s most notable neighborhoods, we will retrace the path of the battle of Barcelona, visiting key sites from the initial barricades to the final clashes at the Atarazanas barracks. Through captivating narratives collected from local neighborhoods and families, we will remember the stories of ordinary lives that deserve recognition. The tour will also feature various locations relevant to George Orwell’s "Homage to Catalonia".
Concluding after approximately 2.5 hours, during which iconic landmarks are highlighted and insights into daily life from 1936 to 1939 are shared, we will part ways at Sant Jaume Square.
