Free Walking Tour of La Orotava
Description
Step into the 15th century on an immersive walking tour that delves into colonial architecture and the legacy of the Guanche Indigenous peoples in La Orotava. Stroll through the town's historic core and uncover the captivating stories embedded in its landscape.
Walking Tour Overview
We will commence our walking journey at the designated hour in the Plaza de la Constitución, setting the stage for an exploration of one of the most renowned locales in northern Tenerife.
As we traverse the charming old town, we’ll take in the charming streets while unraveling the history surrounding one of the island's most ancient settlements.
To gain insights into the town’s origins, we’ll venture back to the Conquest of the Canary Islands during the late 15th century. Discussions will focus on the Guanche Indigenous people, who were the original residents prior to Spanish colonization, as well as the influential Bencomo, the island's most prominent mencey (king).
Wandering through the streets, we’ll observe the grand colonial residences featuring vibrant façades. Along the way, we will encounter significant religious sites such as the Church of Saint Augustine and the Church of Our Lady of Conception.
Our journey continues as we visit the Victoria Gardens, where breathtaking views of La Orotava await us. On clear days, the majestic El Teide may also be visible. While soaking in the scenery, we’ll share insights about the masonic mausoleum that is a focal point of this park.
Before concluding our adventure, we’ll have the chance to appreciate the exterior of the Casa de los Balcones. This remarkable 17th-century structure is renowned for its distinctive balconies, symbolizing the island’s heritage and serving as a perfect backdrop for memorable photographs.
The walking tour of La Orotava wraps up after 1.5 hours, returning us to the original meeting spot.
