Whale Watching in Los Angeles
California stands out as one of the best places in the United States to watch whales. During this boat trip, you'll have the opportunity to observe gray, humpback, and blue whales in their natural habitat, with high chances of spotting them. Depending on the season, different species may be seen as these magnificent creatures migrate.
When booking your whale-watching experience in Los Angeles, you can choose between the following options:
Tour from San Pedro (2-2.5 Hours)
We will navigate the waters of the Pacific Ocean, on the lookout for various types of whales in this natural habitat. If you participate in winter or spring, your trip is likely to feature the stunning gray whales. Conversely, in summer or fall, expect the blue whale to be the highlight of your experience.
While searching for these majestic mammals, keep an eye out for other marine life, such as dolphins and sea lions. This tour from San Pedro will also pass iconic sites, including the lighthouse, West Harbour, the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium, Palos Verdes, and Terminal Island.
We'll return to our starting point after 2 to 2.5 hours.
Tour from Long Beach (2 Hours)
If you prefer to embark on your whale-watching adventure from Long Beach, this is your best choice. As previously mentioned, we will look for the blue whale, gray whale, and humpback whale. This boat ride will also showcase key attractions in Long Beach, including the Long Beach Breakwater, the Aquarium of the Pacific, the Queen Mary, and the THUMS Islands.
After filling your camera with memories, we'll return to the starting point in 2 hours.
Which is the Best Season to See Whales?
The optimal season for spotting gray or humpback whales in Los Angeles is from January to April. For those looking to see blue whales or fin whales, the ideal time is between May and September.
From either San Pedro or Long Beach, you can observe the migration of gray whales from December to May. This period offers a unique chance to witness their journey along the southern California coast. From June to November, blue whales tend to be found close to the shoreline.
Throughout the year, it's also possible to encounter orcas, humpback whales, minke whales, and fin whales among many other marine species. Don't miss this opportunity!
