2-Day Trip to Tierradentro Archaeological National Park

Prepare for an immersive experience as we embark on a two-day exploration of the Tierradentro National Archaeological Park, a site renowned for its significance as one of the world's foremost necropolises. This journey promises an evocative return to the past!

Details of the Trip

Day 1: Neiva - Inza

At the agreed time, our team will collect you from your accommodation in Neiva to kick off this two-day expedition to Tierradentro National Archaeological Park, located within the Inza municipality.

Following a scenic 4-hour drive, we will arrive at our lodging for the stay. After unpacking, we will regroup for a delightful introduction to local flavors with a traditional lunch.

Post lunch, we will venture to the Tierradentro National Archaeological Park, revered as one of the most significant necropolises globally. Our exploration starts with a guided visit to the Museum of Archaeology and Ethnography, where the area's vibrant history and cultural heritage come alive through the artifacts from the communities that resided here before the year 1000 AD.

Our tour will also cover the Alto de Segovia and Alto del Duende, both notable archaeological landmarks that achieved UNESCO World Heritage Site status in 1995. These sites are known for their fascinating underground burial chambers called hypogea, adorned with rock art related to the ancient civilizations' practices surrounding life and death.

In the evening, we will return to our lodgings for a wholesome dinner and a restful night.

Day 2: Inza - Neiva

We kick off early with a hearty breakfast before heading to the San Francisco trail, where we will uncover the secrets of La Pirámide (The Pyramid). This remarkable stone structure, discovered in 1820, is home to three enigmatic tunnels that delve into the heart of the mountain from its lower slopes.

Experts estimate that constructing these tunnels involved the removal of 2000 tons of rock. While the exact purpose remains a mystery, it is thought that La Pirámide served as a crucial religious site for its ancient inhabitants. It’s a fascinating story that we will explore in detail!

After delving into history and capturing memorable photos atop this mountain, we will make our way to the Páez Indigenous community, where we can learn about their heritage while browsing their craft shops.

By noon, we will enjoy a revitalizing lunch, and an hour later, we will commence our journey back to Neiva, concluding our adventure around 5:30 pm.
