Chimborazo Volcano Day Trip

This excursion to Chimborazo Volcano offers an incredible hiking experience toward the Whymper refuge, a visit to the scenic viewpoint of Laguna de Yambo, and an exploration of the beautiful Andean corridor. Prepare to immerse yourself in some of the region's most breathtaking landscapes!

Day Trip Overview

Our adventure begins early in the morning with a pickup from your Quito hotel. Following this, we will embark on a scenic journey of approximately 3 hours, traveling south along the Andean corridor, where stunning mountain vistas await. We'll schedule a 1-hour stop along the way, allowing you to enjoy breakfast before continuing.

Upon reaching the magnificent Chimborazo Volcano, which rises to an impressive 20,547 ft (6,263 m) and holds the title of Ecuador's highest peak, you'll learn that it is also the closest point to the sun due to the Earth's curvature.

Next, we will arrive at the Hermanos Carrel refuge, positioned at an elevation of 15,912 ft (4,850 m). Here, we'll park our vehicle and prepare for our hiking journey. The trail to the Whymper refuge, set at 16,732 ft (5,100 m), takes about 45 minutes. As we trek, you'll be treated to stunning views of expansive Andean grasslands and glaciers. With some luck, you might spot vicuñas, alpacas, and condors soaring overhead.

After a half-hour break at the refuge, we'll make our way back down and enjoy a ride to a local restaurant, where you'll have an hour to savor lunch at your leisure.

Our return journey includes a visit to the spectacular viewpoint of Laguna de Yambo, an emerald lagoon framed by volcanic hills.

Following a 30-minute stop at this viewpoint, we will head back to Quito. We aim to conclude our memorable day with drop-off at your hotel after a total of 12 hours. A truly unforgettable experience!
