Pinochet Tour

At the scheduled time, we will pick you up from your accommodation in Santiago. Our first destination will be Cementerio General (the city's cemetery).

This site serves as an open-air museum, established nearly two centuries ago, where we will uncover Chile's contemporary history through the graves of distinguished individuals resting here. Within the cemetery, we will explore several historically significant areas, including Patio 29, where countless bodies were clandestinely interred during Augusto Pinochet's regime, the Memorial to the Disappeared, and the tomb of Salvador Allende, the Chilean president who lost his life during the coup d'état in 1973.

Our journey continues with a visit to the Museum of Memory and Human Rights, a venue that chronicles the atrocities committed during the military rule from 1973 to 1990. Here, our guide will provide insights into the historical context, facilitating reflection on the traumatic events that unfolded under Pinochet's leadership.

Finally, we will proceed to Villa Grimaldi, a three-acre estate that was originally a community arts hub until 1973 when General Pinochet repurposed it as a center for political detention and interrogation known as Cuartel Terranova. This location served as the operational hub for the secret police, referred to as DINA, and was also the headquarters of the Metropolitan Intelligence Brigade, responsible for the severe repression of Chilean citizens during the military government.

We will conclude this historical exploration of Pinochet's Santiago by returning you to your hotel, completing the tour in approximately four hours.
