Tour Overview
We will gather at the specified time in front of JR Ueno Station and embark on an engaging exploration of this captivating area on foot.
Our journey commences at the Kiyomizu Kannon-do Temple, which holds the title of the oldest remaining structure in Ueno Park. Established in 1631, this beautiful edifice draw inspiration from Kyoto's Kiyomizu-dera, exhibiting its iconic "stage-style" architecture, where the main hall elegantly protrudes over the hillside.
Next, we will meander towards the Hanazono Inari Shrine. Here, a pathway adorned with striking red torii gates creates an enchanting vista that could easily be mistaken for Kyoto. This hidden gem is often overlooked by many visitors, despite its captivating charm.
Our next destination will be Toshogu Shrine, a remarkable Edo-period treasure honoring Tokugawa Ieyasu. With its elaborately gilded entrance, intricate carvings, and a long pathway bordered by stone and bronze lanterns, it stands out as one of Ueno Park's most notable attractions.
Finally, we will immerse ourselves in the lively atmosphere of Ameyoko Shopping Street, an energetic open-air market that spans the distance between Ueno and Okachimachi stations. Initially established as a post-war black market, the name is a contraction of "Ameya Yokocho," meaning "candy store alley," although some believe "Ame" refers to the American merchandise that was once prevalent here. Nowadays, it boasts over 400 shops offering a diverse range of products, from fresh seafood and exotic fruits to cosmetics, apparel, and souvenirs at exceptionally reasonable prices.
After a duration of 2 hours, we will conclude our tour back at the meeting point and bid farewell.
